BLEEK GOES GOTHAM

BLEEK with the JOKER banner, as received. 120”x60”

I first saw Bleek’s name in the late 1990s, from the driver’s seat, on my way to work. It was up on billboards. I didn’t know who he was yet. I just knew somebody was getting up there.

Cody “Bleek” Smith is CBS — Can’t Be Stopped. He is the crew’s historian, he directed their documentary, and thirty years of photographing the LA scene from the inside became his book, From Negatives to Positives.

He also cuts movie trailers for a living. He is the writer who painted the billboard and the guy in the edit bay whose industry is coming apart around him. He does not have to imagine the argument. He is living both halves of it.

So when the Joker banner came to him — October 2019, a face caught mid-scream, printed at lobby scale and then rolled up for the trash — he knew what to do with it.

His piece runs the full width in blue and green, letters stacked across the lower two-thirds so the Joker’s open mouth reads through the gaps. The face is still there. The tear is still there. The surface just does not belong to the studio anymore. CBS sits vertically in the bottom right corner.

Then, in the top right, in white handstyle, straight across the credit block, three words:

BLOCK THE MERGER.

That is the entire project in three words.

The designers who built it were paid once and never again. The writers who paint over things like it were never paid at all — they were ticketed for it. Bleek put the argument in writing, in the one place on the poster reserved for the people who got paid.

Gotham was always Los Angeles with the lights turned down.
