CHAZ

Charles “Chaz” Bojórquez is a Mexican-American Chicano artist from Highland Park, Los Angeles, widely recognized for elevating Cholo-style graffiti and calligraphy into the contemporary art world. Trained in painting, ceramics, calligraphy, and Pre-Columbian art, Bojórquez brought formal discipline to the visual language of the streets, blending typography, cultural pride, and graffiti tradition into a powerful signature style. In 1969, he created Señor Suerte, one of Los Angeles’ first known stenciled graffiti images, which became an enduring icon of Chicano street culture. His work draws from placas, roll calls, Mexican muralism, tattoo lettering, and global writing systems, transforming letters into bold visual statements of identity, loyalty, and place. Over the course of his career, Bojórquez has moved fluidly between street art, fine art, commercial design, and major brand collaborations, becoming one of the most important figures in Los Angeles graffiti history.
